Ashwell School

Project Overview

One of the main challenges to this project was working in a live school environment, with pupil and staff safety the number one priority. All works were completed to a very high standard, with zero incidents on site. The detailing to the bell tower showed particular skill in achieving a high-quality finish. Internal protection was needed due to lack of internal protection, which meant close liaison with the school to minimise disruption to teaching activities.

Lead detailing was replaced in certain areas including ornate areas around the bell tower.

All works were completed on time and under budget.

Wincobank School

Project Overview

Wincobank School had suffered over the years from an extremely old and tired roofing stock, including both flat and pitched sections. Numerous patch repairs over the years had done little to stop the issues, so M&J stepped in and assisted in not only gaining them almost £1m in funding, but also completely overhauled all of their roof areas to leave them completely in the dry and guaranteed for the next 25 years+.

Being an infant school, child safety was the number one priority so M&J sat down with the client to determine a phased approach to scaffolding and roofing works, to ensure that classroom disruption was kept to a minimum, and that the works had as little impact as possible on the teaching environment. Noisy works were also carried out outside of teaching hours.

There were a number of complex details and interfaces between the different types of roofing, which took a lot of planning with M&J’s design team to make sure that all were done in conjunction with each other. M&J’s flat roofing and pitched roofing division sat down together and planned each and every detail, making sure nothing was left to chance. Full invasive surveys were carried out prior to the installation so that information was as accurate as possible for the operatives.

With no H&S incidents, and over 3,000 man hours on site, the project was a complete success. Under budget and on program.

Clifton School

Project Overview

A Project value of over £700k and all carried out during term time, except for utilising the Easter Holidays. All rooms had to be decanted before works could start, which was done with close liaison with the school management team. This site was also within a conservation area.

Workmanship was of an extremely high quality, with the client commenting that it was the best slate roof he had ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Attention to detail was a must, given the building’s status in a conservation area. All slates had to be double lapped, with Klober dry ridge and hip details throughout. All re-used slates were positioned on the sections of roof that could be best viewed from the public (Front entrance, side section adjacent to main road etc).

M&J repointed and formed new lead details around the Bell Tower as part of the works, restoring it back to its original grand state. Lead detailing was also used on the plinths and valleys

All fascias and soffits were decorated alongside the re-roofing works.
