2015 NATIONAL Roofing Awards!

M&J score a hat-trick with 2015 NATIONAL Roofing Awards!

nfrcawards15_winner_white_2M&J Group are proud to have completed a hat-trick when winning the National Roofing Award Category for Best Flat Roofing Refurbishment Project, the third time M&J have won this in the last 6 years, whilst maintaining a position in the top 3 in the years we did not win!

Our Company was included in 2 of the 4 shortlisted places; with projects at Hammersmith Hospital (Neo-Natal Unit) and The Atomic Energy Authority (Culham Science Academy). Co-incidentally both of these projects were supported by key supply chain partners, IKO Roofing Products and RAM Consultancy.

The Hammersmith Hospital project was selected as the ultimate winner from over a hundred UK wide entries.

Group CEO, Peter Henrickson, had this to say: “it is always particularly pleasing to be recognised by your industry peers. M&J have a long 40+ year history in roofing and our investment in training –this project was carried out by 2 operatives who only recently completed their M&J training scholarship– continues to pay dividends year on year, as these awards are testimony to”

About the project

Hammersmith Hospital is one of a group of hospitals under the ‘jurisdiction’ of the Imperial NHS Trust.   Neo-Natal Unit, as the name suggests oversees new born babies in often critical conditions. It was vital this project was treated not only with urgency, but also with great care and consideration to the potential disruption the works may cause.

RAM Consultancy were invited by the Trust to put together a detailed design brief of the proposed refurbishment. Taking into consideration the significant challenges posed by the high density of roof top plant which services not only the climate internally, but also the delicate medical equipment. All of which had to be maintained in full working order throughout the works.

M&Js bid for the project included a detailed Construction Phase Plan of how the above could be achieved. This was drawn up following close consultation with the hospital staff and FM team, emphasizing M&Js attention to detail.

Of particular concern was the MRI Coolant Quench Pipe (CQP). The CQP prevents the highly sensitive MRI scanner from overheating. Given that the scanners can never be switched off once activate, the CQP could quench without warning at any time. When it does, the consequence can be catastrophic for any person in the near vicinity, given that it emits a potentially lethal dose of liquid helium at -268c!   Working in tandem with the site FM team on a safe worker ‘tag’ system, M&J completed this highly hazardous operation without incident.

As there was so much equipment on the roof, detailing had to be carefully considered. M&J proposed the IKO “SAFE STICK” flame free application system and combined this the IKO “POLIMAR” cold applied reinforced liquid system where complex detailing was required.

The conclusion was a successful award winning job, but the story does not end there. Not only was this M&Js 3rd such award in 6 years. It was our 2nd award for work for Imperial NHS Trust. In 2013 we won the same award for our work on the MRI Scanner Building at Charing Cross Hospital.

So what does our client think?

….I .just wanted to say thanks to the M&J team again for another successful project. I don’t know why I even worry about these roofing projects anymore…
