Finalists for the Roofing Awards 2015

We are pleased to announce we have been shortlisted as finalists for the Roofing Awards 2015.

After another record breaking year in which the M&J Group continued to achieve a sustained level of growth, we are pleased to have been shortlisted for this years 2015 Roofing Awards organised by The NFRC.

M&J Group were shortlisted for two projects under the Reinforced Bitumen Membrane category. These projects included a major re-roofing project at the Hammersmith Hospital, in partnership with the Neo-Natal Unit and for another major re-roofing project at the Culham Science Centre – The home of the UK’s Atomic Energy Authority.

Here are some further details about our nominations and the projects we have been nominated for:

Culham Science Centre – UK Atomic Energy.culhamsciencecentre

Building 5, Culham Science Centre is owned and managed by the UK Atomic Energy Authority and combines world class publicly funded research with fusion power. Some of the world’s largest energy companies are based on the site as well as some of the most innovative energy companies in the country.

As is to be expected on a site like Culham, H&S and security was a number one priority for the client both at roof and ground level.

Not only were there complex security issues with working on an Atomic site, the existing felt was also found to contain asbestos, which had to be handled and disposed in a controlled manner. To keep the continuity when stripping the roof and to keep the building watertight, M&J sent its operatives on a specialist training course to safely strip the asbestos materials themselves, allowing a smooth transition throughout the re-roofing project. It was particularly important to keep the building watertight during the entire operation and the building owners were contemplating a temporary roof alongside a separately contracted asbestos removal company, which would have cost over £100k until M&J gave the confidence to the building occupiers that it could be done without the temporary roof and without the need for a separate asbestos contract, saving the client a significant sum of money.

 Hammersmith Hospital – Neo-Natal Unit.

The Imperial NHS Trust had experienced numerous leaks over the last few years into the Neo-Natal Unit at Hammersmith Hospital which has been hampering this critical service to the hospital and the local Hammersmith community.NNU1

A Design & Build package was put OTT with a major emphasis on fully maintaining the function of these critical services contained below within the Neo-natal Unit throughout the refurbishment works.

M&J visited site at tender stage with an experienced management team to directly engage with the NNU Team and to discuss the complex co-ordination of the works in order to plan and ensure the function of their services.

Like many hospitals, this roof had a considerable amount of plant that either couldn’t be moved, or had restrictions on when and how much it could be moved. There was also an MRI Scanning unit and live Theatres directly below the roof, which were served by mechanical plant on the roof. This all had to be carefully dealt with and managed, which was done in conjunction with M&J’s M&E contractor.

To complicate the project a strict method of works had to be put in place with physical exclusion zones around the MRI Coolant Quench Pipe that could, if triggered, dump a potentially lethal dose of liquid helium which ‘quenches’ at -268c!

As there was so much plant on the roof, detailing had to be carefully considered and M&J selected IKOs flame-free Safestick System, which combined the robust nature of built up felt roofing with the safety of not having to use a naked flame. M&J combined this system with a small amount of Polimar reinforced liquid for some intrinsic detailing.
